You know, when you travel those narrow mountain roads into Gilgit-Baltistan, the views are heart-touching, but the struggles people face every day are heartbreaking. In the land of hospitality, Skardu, Shigar, and the peaceful villages of Basha Valley, families wake up wondering if their children will get an education, if a doctor will be there when a baby is coming, or if they will have clean water to drink.
That’s why Al-Bayan Foundation Baltistan started working here years ago. We are a small, passionate Northern Pakistan NGO that actually lives and works side by side with these families. We don’t just visit, we stay, we listen, and we build things that last.
Why Life Is Hard Here — and How We Are Changing It
In these remote valleys where government help often doesn’t reach, we quietly opened doors to real healthcare and education for both girls and boys. Everyone is in the same garden. Equal chances are at the heart of everything we do
Helping Families Build a Better Future
We have seen many parents struggle just to feed their children. So we created practical programs that help families earn more, save a little, and feel truly stable. It’s not quick money, it’s steady support that fits real mountain life.
Giving Children Back Their Childhood
Nothing hurts us more than seeing kids forced into labor instead of school. We aim to bring children back to classrooms by providing them with more care and counseling and working closely with entire villages so every child stays safe, learns, and is able to dream again. Every single child deserves protection, joy, and a brighter future.
Clean Water That Changed Everything
We completed 19 big water supply projects across these villages between 2020 and 2025. Women and children no longer spend hours carrying heavy buckets from dirty streams. Waterborne illnesses have reduced, crops are thriving, animals are healthier, and mothers finally have no time to rest and care for their families.
Bring Quality Education, No Matter How Far
Education is our biggest passion. Here’s how we’re making it happen:
- Al Bayan Foundation Baltistan Education Institute gives free primary and secondary schooling to low-income and forgotten families.
- Boys’ Care and Shelter Home – Skardu provides a safe home and study support for boys who must leave their faraway villages for higher classes.
- We train teachers from early childhood right up to grade 5 with modern, kind, child-friendly methods and some digital tools.
- Every year, we give scholarships to more than 50 students, all the way from school to university.
- We hand out free school uniforms and warm winter clothes so the cold never stops a child from learning.
Healthcare That’s Actually Saving Lives
Since 2023, together with Imamia Medics International (IMI), we have opened the Basha Valley Health Facility. It’s a full 24/7 center with doctors and a small lab, especially caring for pregnant mothers and children. Before its establishment, many women died on the long, dangerous road from Shigar to Skardu during delivery. Now help is close, and lives are being saved every day.
With the Lady Fatima Charitable Trust, we run an emergency ambulance, so no one has to carry sick people on wooden ladders anymore. Every mother’s eyes shine with happiness on a newborn’s arrival. We also have free medical camps that bring doctors and medicines straight to the villages, especially after disasters.
Empowering Women to be a Part of Global Progress
Through UM-E-KULSOOM Vocational Training Centers, women learn hands-on skills like sewing, crafts, and small business ideas. We also give them small interest-free loans (Qarz-e-Hasna) so they can start earning their own money. The confidence we now see on their faces is truly wonderful.
More Ways We Are Building Stronger Villages
- We introduce village kids to computers and simple technology to ensure they don’t feel lost in today’s online world.
- Disasters hit hard here: floods rushing in, landslides, fires, and quakes. We jump in quickly with food, warm blankets against the freezing nights, temporary shelter, and doctors if needed. It’s tough work, but families hugging us after means everything.
Climate Change
The climate is changing glaciers are melting more quickly every year. We plant trees to hold soil, teach farmers crops that survive weird weather, and help villages build small walls to stay safe next time.
Our Real Promise to These Mountains
We just want kids running to school with smiles, clean water right at home, quick help when someone’s sick, and families sleeping without fear. That’s all. We put our whole hearts into being honest, caring, and respecting every person we meet. No show, just real love for these people.
If This Moved You Even a Little
Your help can change lives here: sponsor one child’s school supplies, chip in for water, give for disaster times, or volunteer if you’re close. Small steps add up to huge ones.
Join us. Let these mountains fill with hope and kids’ laughter again. Message anytime, we’re waiting.
